Dr. Nadine Burke Harris

Nadine Burke Harris

Dr. Nadine Burke Harris is the surgeon general of California (the first appointed to that position) and the author of The Deepest Well: Healing the Long Term Effects of Childhood Adversity. She is a pediatrician with extensive knowledge and experience in the field of stress management, particularly in children. She specializes in Adverse Childhood Experiences and is a pioneer in the treatment of toxic stress and founded the Center for Youth Wellness. Dr. Burke Harris is an excellent resource for parents, teachers, or anyone else who is involved in the caring, growth and development of children.

Being a parent, I was absolutely blown away after reading her book when I learned about the detrimental effects stress can have on children. This is a must read for everyone because it’s likely that most people (regardless if they have children of their own) will have some kind of interaction with children at some point in their lives. And those interactions can literally affect the children for the rest of their lives.

Children’s brains are extremely vulnerable and malleable. If they are exposed to stress, anger and hardship, the negative effects can be profound and last well into adulthood. It is vital to know and understand the mechanisms of Adverse Childhood Experiences as to try to avoid them. I would encourage everyone to read the Deepest Well and check out Dr. Nadine Burke Harris’s work.
