The one thing that scares me more than anything is death. Not my own, but the death of my family. My wife or my kids. And I know millions share this fear. So how do I deal with it? What mindset should I adopt towards death?
It might be controversial, even harsh, but I double down on my belief that there’s life after this one, and it’s unimaginably better. Essentially, death can be, and often is, a blessing.
It’s hard to write this, but what helps me cope with the death of a loved one is putting myself in their shoes. I can’t imagine losing a child or wife too soon, but the idea that they’re in a better place helps. They’re free from the pain and suffering so present in this life.
Regardless of time spent here, if God exists, and we’re with Him after we die, that’s significant. We should celebrate death like some cultures do. Regardless of how or when it happens, life here pales compared to eternity with the ultimate, infinite source of love, beauty, and goodness.
Our Choice
Thoughts about death are normal. But if we constantly dwell on it, feel anxious, or fearful, we need a better mindset. This is the one I find helpful.
Death comes to us all. Before it does, we should live life to the fullest, give our unique gift to the world. But if death comes to loved ones early, we do everything we can to not let it burden us.
Put yourself in their shoes. They’re in the presence of perfect, unrestricted, love, beauty, and goodness, in infinite joy and unimaginable happiness. It’s our choice to view death as good or bad. Maybe it frees us from this broken world. Maybe it’s a gift, an upgrade from this life.
We can turn fear into a healthy motivator to do everything we can in this life to be with God in the next. Focus on greater love, on purpose and meaning, on selflessness, and self-control. Focus on glorifying God, and on living a better life today, because today is all we have.
